چکیده

Objective To describe cross-sectional associations between features observed on ultrasound (US) or clinical joint examination and hand symptoms among community-dwelling older adults (n = 519), to determine whether such are independent of age, sex, body mass index, other imaging features. Methods Hand pain, function, stiffness were assessed using a visual analog scale (VAS) the Australian/Canadian Osteoarthritis (AUSCAN) index. Standardized US examinations performed, grip strength was dynamometer. Data analyzed hurdle linear models adjusted for demographic factors Results Abnormal findings common in with without pain. Greater numbers tender joints associated greater pain (VAS: β 2.63 [95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.88, 3.39]; AUSCAN pain: 10.57 CI 4.00, 17.13]), poorer function (β 4.07 1.28, 6.86]), –0.15 –0.27, –0.03]). Power Doppler (PDI) synovitis 2.61 1.03, 4.19]; 13.07 3.82, 22.32]), but not function. Joint deformity 4.51 1.75, 7.26]) –0.23 –0.40, –0.05]), Gray-scale only –0.22 –0.41, –0.04]). Associations partially mediated by Conclusion Joints that palpation have US-identified PDI potential treatment targets Treating preventing is required improve adults.
